Sixth Men’s Golfer Qualifies for US Amateur

BATON ROUGE – The LSU men’s golf program added a school record sixth qualifier for the United States Amateur Championship on Tuesday as incoming freshman Franco Castro of Alpharetta, Ga., is set to compete alongside his teammates in the nation’s most prestigious amateur tournament.

Castro earned his spot by tying for fourth place in Tuesday’s sectional qualifier held at Achasta Golf Club in Dahlonega, Ga., where he fired a 9-under par 135 in two rounds.

A total of six LSU golfers have now qualified for the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship as Castro joins a list that includes such Tiger standouts as graduating senior Brent Blaum, seniors John Peterson and Clayton Rotz, junior Sang Yi and fellow freshman Andrew Presley.

The 110th edition of the U.S. Amateur Championship will be held Aug. 23-29 at Chambers Bay Golf Club in Tacoma, Wash. This marks the fifth-straight season in which the LSU men’s golf program will be represented in the nation’s leading amateur tournament sponsored by the United States Golf Association.
