BATON ROUGE — LSU women’s tennis head coach Tony Minnis led his Southern Girls 18s National Team to capture the USTA National Teams Championship title Friday in Claremont, Calif.
The win marks the second consecutive national championship for the Southern section since 1997.
The No. 4 seed Southern section upset the No. 2 seed Midwest section, 4-3, in a hotly-contested match. To advance to the final round of the tournament, the Southern section took down the Southwest section, the Middle States section and the Southern California section.
“I’m extremely proud of these girls,” said head coach Tony Minnis. “Nobody picked us to win, and we really came together as a team in a short time. The team did a great job of defending the title from last year.”
