BATON ROUGE – The entire LSU Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes staff took time to volunteer during two lunch sessions at the St. Vincent de Paul Dining Room over the last two weeks.

“It’s extremely important to give back to community where we live. This is just one example of how we, the Cox Communications Academic Center Team collectively, leave to serve,” ACSA Executive Director Kenneth Miles said. “These are the same words that we remind our student-athletes when they graduate. They also are the same words that are located above the south arc when leaving the main advising center of the building. I truly believe that we have developed and cultivated change agents whether they are employees or student-athletes of LSU to make a difference in the community.”

St. Vincent de Paul has been actively striving to understand and fulfill the needs of the poor within Baton Rouge and the surrounding community since 1865. They aid the most vulnerable members of our community.

“It was fantastic to have the help of the LSU Academic Center staff. They gave up their lunch time to help the needy,” Chief Executive Officer at St. Vincent de Paul Michael Acaldo said. “In the current economy, we are serving record numbers of those in need. This volunteer help was critical in helping us to meet the demand. We hope other groups in the community will follow this outstanding example of community leadership. We need all the help we can get.”

Through its various programs, St. Vincent de Paul reaches out to those in need to provide hot meals to those who would otherwise go hungry, warm beds to those who would have no place to sleep, medications to those who could not afford them on their own, and the mandatory uniforms that children need to attend school.

“This year, we will serve over 200,000 meals to the poor, homeless and elderly,” Acaldo said. “We really appreciate the continued support of the LSU sports family. This commitment to our community is critical in these difficult economic times. They gave the best gift they could give – the gift of themselves.”
