Rather Returns to Women’s Golf as Assistant

BATON ROUGE – Former LSU golfer Alexis Rather has returned to LSU to rejoin the women’s golf program as an assistant coach, LSU women’s golf coach Karen Bahnsen announced.

Rather joins the LSU staff after two years as an assistant coach on the Ole Miss women’s golf staff.

“I am so excited to be a part of the LSU family again,” Rather said Monday. “I am fortunate to have the opportunity to be back at my alma mater and be able to not only give back to a school and program that gave me so much, but also learn more about the game from one of my mentors, Karen Bahnsen. I have learned so much the past two years in my role at Ole Miss and look forward to using my experience there to help continue to add to the LSU tradition. I look forward to working with Karen and the girls and can’t wait to get things started.”

The native of Tupelo, Miss., was a four-year letter winner at LSU, appeared in two NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships and was a four-time National Golf Coaches Association scholar-athlete. Rather, a two-time First-Team All-Louisiana golfer had her best season as a senior in 2008, averaging 74.56 with three top 10 finishes. She also chipped in for the only birdie in sudden death in a playoff for the final qualifying spot at the NCAA East Regional in 2008.

The chip-in propelled LSU to the 2008 Championships where LSU finished in 15th place.

Over the course of her career, Rather played in all but three tournaments during her four years. She posted three top 10s and six top 20 performances and her 128 career rounds played is tied for fourth most rounds played by an LSU women’s golfer.

“We are very excited to have Alexis back at LSU,” said Bahnsen, who will begin her 27th year as the head coach of the Lady Tigers this fall. “I think she will be a great addition to our LSU family. As a player, she brought a lot to our team and in the assistant coach position I believe she will play a big role in our continued success. I really look forward to working with her and I believe we will make a great team.”

Along with the national scholar-athlete honors, she was a four-time member of the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.

The 25-year-old Rather also played one year of point guard for the Tupelo High School basketball team. She graduated with honors in journalism from LSU in July 2007 and received her master’s in sports management from LSU in 2008.

The hiring is pending approval of the LSU Board of Supervisors.
