BATON ROUGE — Former LSU swimming standout Evan Martinec will be inducted into the Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame in his home state of Washington on Thursday night.
A native of Tacoma, Wash., Martinec proved to be one of the greatest men’s swimmers in school history from 2000-04, excelling as a backstroke, butterfly, individual medley and relay performer.
Martinec earned nine NCAA All-America honors (four first-team) during his career, which is the third-highest total in program annals, and was named to the All-Southeastern Conference team three times.
As a senior in 2003-04, Martinec won the SEC championship in the 100-yard backstroke and captured fourth overall in the 100-meter back at NCAA’s. He also shattered school records in the 100 back (46.23 seconds) and 200 back (1:44.36), and both marks remain standing today.
The former Tiger graduated from LSU with a degree in construction management in Spring 2006.
The Tacoma-Pierce County Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1957 by the Tacoma Athletic Commission to recognize individuals from the area who have garnered significant local and regional acclaim through their athletic achievements.
Martinec is one of 34 individuals who will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
