Golf Assistant Borst Named UK Head Coach

BATON ROUGE – LSU women’s golf assistant coach Golda Johansson Borst was named Thursday by the University of Kentucky to fill its opening as head women’s golf coach.

Borst moves to Kentucky after three years as assistant coach at LSU under Coach Karen Bahnsen. Borst also played collegiate golf in the SEC at the University of Tennessee.

During the three years as an assistant coach at LSU, the Lady Tigers went to three NCAA Regionals and two NCAA Division I National Championships. The Tigers during that time had the first back-to-back first-team All-SEC and All-American golfer (Megan McChrystal) since Meredith Duncan in 2001-02.

The Tigers have won three tournaments and had three individual wins during her tenure with Bahnsen.

“We are going to miss Golda very much at LSU,” said LSU women’s golf head coach Karen Bahnsen, who competed her 26th season as head coach at LSU. “But we are also very excited for this opportunity for her to go to Kentucky as head coach.  This is one of her dreams to be a head coach in the Southeastern Conference. We wish her nothing but the best in the future and she will always have a strong friendship and relationship with our program.”

The matching of a veteran coach and the former SEC star with an engaging personality proved to be a perfect pairing at keeping LSU in the national women’s golf spotlight. Borst came to LSU from the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Sarasota, Fla., where she served as an outside service professional.

Borst graduated from Tennessee in Dec. 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. She was a four-year letter winner at UT, earning second-team All-SEC honors in 2006 and she was a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.

“I can’t thank Karen Bahnsen and the LSU Athletic Department enough for the past three years,” said Johansson Borst. “It has been such a privilege to work with Karen and the players on our team. LSU will always have a special place in my heart and I am very thankful for my time here.  It is a true honor to become the women’s golf coach at the University of Kentucky and I look forward to this new chapter in my life.”

The former Golda Johansson was a member of the Swedish National Golf Team for seven years and won first place in the 2000 Girls Team European Championship in Stockholm, Sweden. She was part of the Swedish team that won silver in the Girls European Championship in 2001 in Porto, Portugal and bronze in the Ladies European Championship in 2002 in Moscow, Russia.

The 27-year-old Borst, born in Karlshamn, Sweden, is married to Steve Borst.
