Ross Named LSWA Pitcher of the Week

BATON ROUGE – Centerfielder Bear Comer of Nicholls State and pitcher Austin Ross of LSU were named Tuesday as the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Baseball Players of the Week.

Comer, a junior from Pace, Fla., was named Hitter of the Week as he hit .714 (10-for-14), slugged .857 and got on base at a .750 clip. He went 4-for-4 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored in a 15-3 win over McNeese State on Thursday. On Friday, he was 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Comer led Nicholls to a come-from-behind win on Saturday by going 3-for-4 with an RBI double that started the scoring in the Colonels’ seven-run ninth inning that gave Nicholls a 10-6 comeback victory over McNeese.

Ross, a junior right-hander from Shreveport, La., was named Pitcher of the Week after he helped LSU clinch a berth in the SEC Tournament on Friday night, defeating Mississippi State with his third straight quality start in conference play.

Ross limited the Bulldogs to three runs on four hits in seven innings with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Ross, who tied his career high with 10 strikeouts on May 16 at Kentucky, now has a team-best 86 strikeouts in 73.2 innings this season.
