WILMINGTON, N.C. – Megan McChrystal struggled early in her third round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship, finishing with a four-over round of 76.
Plagued by two double bogeys around a birdie in the first three holes, the Stuart, Fla., junior finished 54 holes at three-over par 219 (72-71-76) and in a tie for 23rd place with Friday’s final round still to come. McChrystal is still in very good shape to get a top 15 finish, the cutoff for which the NCAA offers individual awards in the competition.
McChrystal lost a ball in the water on the par four first and struggled getting out of bunker on number three that led to the doubles. She got it back to two-over par with her third straight birdie on the par 5 510-yard sixth hole, but had one more bogey to turn at three-over 39.
“Megan did not strike the ball well (Thursday),” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “The wind was swirling and she just didn’t trust it. But she has played well and did a good job hanging in on the final nine holes and I am confident she will play well to close out the tournament on Friday.”
McChrystal did get her game back together in the final nine holes posting a one-over 37 with just one bogey.
To get to 15th place, entering the final round the number is one-over par, 217. The individual leader is Jennifer Johnson of Arizona State who remained in the lead after a two-under 70 put her at nine-under par 207 through three rounds (67-70-70). Caroline Hedwall of Oklahoma State is one shot back at 208.
Entering the final round the new team leader is Purdue, who went by second-round leader Southern California with a round of 281, seven-under par. The team total of five under is six strokes ahead of second-round leader Southern California.
The final round starts at 7 a.m. CDT with live scoring at LSUsports.net through Golfstat.com. Live streaming of the final round of the event will also be available beginning at 11 a.m. through NCAATV.
