BATON ROUGE — Dozens of LSU student-athletes came together to help beautify the campus Friday during the inaugural Spring Greening Day service project and Sustainability Expo.
A campus-wide effort coordinated by Campus Life as part of the Green Tiger Project initiative, Spring Greening Day was organized in honor of Earth Day 2010 to help accentuate the campus’ beauty while also drawing attention to the importance of sustainability.
Under the direction of Landscape Services, registered student organizations planted flowers, laid sod and spread mulch in prepared beds at prearranged locations across the core of the campus.
Through the CHAMPS/Life Skills program and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, members of the swimming and diving, track and field, men’s basketball, volleyball, soccer and gymnastics teams each devoted an hour or two during the day to touch up the area around Lockett Hall.
Several student-athletes then moved over to the Parade Grounds, where they mulched all of the oak trees lining the area.
“It was a blast to be with the team and help out around campus,” men’s diver Matt Vieke said. “We did a little bit of planting near Lockett and finished early, so we walked over to the Parade Grounds and spread a ton of mulch around the oaks.
“It was a pleasure to be able to work with Landscape Services and help them out because that kind of work can take a long time, and we were able to accomplish quite a bit in one day.”
