COLUMBIA, S.C. — After capturing the doubles point, the LSU women’s tennis team was unable to keep its momentum going as it dropped a 5-2 decision to South Carolina Friday in Columbia, S.C.
“We fought as hard as we’ve fought all year. If we play with that type of intensity I think we can really turn things around,” said head coach Tony Minnis. “I was really impressed with the effort and attitude the girls played with today.”
The Lady Tigers jumped to an early lead when they claimed the doubles point. Keri Frankenberger and Hannah Robinson finished first on court two as they took down South Carolina’s Miljana Jocic and M. Saari-Bystrom 8-3.
LSU (2-7) clinched the doubles point on court two as Kaitlin Burns and Whitney Wolf defeated Ana Marija Zubori and Dijana Stojic in a see-saw affair 8-6.
On court three, Nicole Kantor and freshman Ebie Wilson fell to the Gamecock pair of Anya Morgina and Adriana Pereira 8-5.
In singles, Robinson dropped her match to Pereira 6-0, 6-1 on court six, and Wilson fell short to Jocic 6-2, 6-3.
Lady Tiger Frankenberger played an unbelievable match as she notched a victory over Saari-Bystrom 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 on court four.
On court three, Kantor played well but was unable to upend No. 111 Morgina as the Gamecock took the match 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Freshman Burns dropped her first match of the dual season as Stojic clinched the overall match for South Carolina in a competitive three-set battle 6-2, 6-7, 6-1. The Wilmington, N.C., native leads the Lady Tigers in dual match wins with seven.
South Carolina’s (5-3) 72nd-ranked Zubori completed the match on court one when she defeated Wolf 1-6, 7-6, 6-4.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action Sunday to take on No. 6 Florida in Gainesville, Fla. First serve is slated for noon CST.
