BATON ROUGE – Rising senior Courtney Alexander accounted for five of LSU’s six goals in a dominating 6-0 victory over in-state foe Nicholls State on Tuesday night as the Tigers played host to their second exhibition match of the spring season at the LSU Soccer Complex.
The Tigers are now 2-0 on the spring season after earning a 5-0 win over the Northwestern State Demons in their spring season opener at the LSU Soccer Complex on March 24.
“I think we took another step in the right direction tonight. It’s important for us to continue to improve as a team each time we have the opportunity to compete this spring,” said LSU head coach Brian Lee. “I was pleased with what I saw tonight, but we still have a lot of room for improvement going forward.”
Alexander put LSU on top early with her first goal of the game in the fifth minute of play with a one-time shot following a precise left-footed cross into the middle of the area by junior Allysha Chapman. Alexander then assisted on back-to-back goals by junior Kellie Murphy in the 13th and 49th minutes before assisting on freshman Kaley Blades‘ first goal of the spring season in the 61st minute of play.
Alexander then gave the Tigers a commanding 5-0 lead in the 71st minute with her second goal of the day after receiving the ball at the top of the box, pivoting to her right with her back to the goal and firing a left footed blast inside the top-left corner from approximately 20 yards out.
Sophomore Carlie Banks gave LSU its final 6-0 margin in the final minute of play with a shot into the net from inside the six-yard box on a rebound from an initial shot by redshirt freshman Amy Porter.
The Tigers return to the pitch on April 17 when they travel to the Orange Beach Sportsplex in Orange Beach, Ala., to take on SEC Western Division rival Auburn. They will then return home April 22 to battle in-state rival McNeese State in a match slated for a 7 p.m. CT kickoff at the LSU Soccer Complex.
