BATON ROUGE – LSU gymnast Summer Hubbard was named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team on Thursday for her superior service efforts in the Baton Rouge community.
A senior from St. Petersburg, Fla., Hubbard has served as the LSU gymnastics team’s coordinator of community service events throughout the year.
She and the team have spent countless hours working in the community and volunteering their time to help.
Hubbard volunteered at the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon in 2009, and she also served as a Juvenile Diabetes Walk volunteer where she led the stretch and encouraged participants.
She spearheaded the gymnastics team’s participation in the annual LSU Halloween BOOzar where the team set up an obstacle course and maze for local youth to have a fun, safe night of trick-or-treating with LSU student-athletes.
Among other service activities, Hubbard volunteered at the Oakgrove Elementary read-a-thon and participated in the Miles for Myles Run to raise money for cancer research in honor of the late NCAA President, Myles Brand.
Hubbard worked the Senior Olympics in Baton Rouge by serving food to participants at an event in a local hotel, and she also took part in the Christmas Toy Drive along with the team when they raised money to provide clothes, toys and other gifts to children as part of the Christmas with the Tigers program.
Hubbard currently serves on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) as a gymnastics representative.
Not only has she been exemplary in the community, but she has also excelled in the gym. Hubbard is a two-time First Team All-American on uneven bars and currently ranks in the top 25 nationally on bars.
The 10th-ranked LSU gymnastics team will compete in the SEC Championship in Jacksonville, Fla., at 3 p.m. CT Saturday in Veterans Memorial Arena.
