BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – LSU pitchers Cody Trahan and Rachele Fico picked up SEC Pitcher and Freshman of the Week honors Monday as announced by the league office. It marks the first weekly award for both players from the SEC.
LSU (26-4, 8-0 SEC) has won 21 consecutive games, a new program record, dating back to Feb. 20. The previous mark was a 19-game streak held by the 2000 squad. The last time LSU won two SEC weekly awards in the same week came during the 2007 season when Emily Turner and Jazz Jackson were selected SEC Pitcher and Freshman of the Week, respectively.
“I challenged the pitchers to truly become a staff at the beginning of the season,” head coach Yvette Girouard said. “They’ve done an incredible job of helping and working with each other on their weaknesses in the bullpen. The fantastic thing is they’re all about the Tigers and not themselves.”
Trahan added wins over Ole Miss and Auburn to push her record to 8-0 for the season. She surrendered only one run and tallied 12 strikeouts highlighted by hurling a three-hitter in game one of the Auburn series. For the season, Trahan has surrendered only two runs and racked up 57 strikeouts in 53 frames of work.
Fico garnered two wins and a save in 11.0 shutout frames. She notched a win in relief over Ole Miss and recorded a save where she stranded runners at second and third to secure LSU’s 4-3 middle game victory over Auburn. In her lone start of the week, Fico tossed a six-hitter versus Auburn during the series finale and has strung together nine consecutive victories since opening weekend.
LSU steps out of SEC action Tuesday at 6 p.m. to take on Nicholls State in a rescheduled contest from March 10. The game will be broadcasted live on 104.5/104.9 FM in the Baton Rouge area with Patrick Wright and Kent Lowe on the call.
Season ticket holders are asked to use their original tickets at the gate for admission. Live video and stats also are available in the Geaux Zone on LSUsports.com in addition to live in-game updates on www.twitter.com/lsu_softball.
