BATON ROUGE – The LSU men’s and women’s golf teams have enjoyed an outstanding start to the spring, and juniors Andrew Loupe and Megan McChrystal have been honored for their performance with the latest Southeastern Conference Men’s and Women’s Golfer of the Week awards.
Loupe captured his first career individual crown while leading the Tigers to the team title at the Louisiana Classics in Lafayette on March 9, while McChrystal also took home medalist honors in leading the Lady Tigers to a fourth-place finish at the Tiger-Wave Classic in New Orleans on Sunday.
Loupe fired a career-low 54-hole tournament score of 8-under par 208, including consecutive scores of 5-under 67 in the second and third rounds at Oakbourne Country Club, to lead LSU to the team title.
A native of Baton Rouge, Loupe defeated five other golfers ranked among the Top 100 college players in the country in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. That includes a narrow one-stroke victory over the nation’s 15th-ranked player in Scott Langley of Illinois en route to the individual crown.
With his performance, Loupe is now ranked No. 34 among players in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index as he is making a strong case for All-SEC and All-America honors this season. He has now finished in the top five of the leaderboard in three of the last four tournaments while improving his scoring average to 71.7 stroke per round on the year to lead the men’s squad.
McChrystal has been just as impressive while leading the Lady Tigers throughout the season as her win at the Tiger-Wave Classic was her first of the season and third of her career as she now ranks in a third place tie on the all-time list of individual winners at LSU.
McChrystal captured medalist honors at English Turn after firing 3-under par 213 for three rounds, which included back-to-back even-par 72s in the first and second rounds and a 3-under 69 in the final round.
McChrystal defeated Virginia’s Calle Nielson by a single shot after entering the final three holes in a tight battle while tied for the lead. The LSU standout won in dramatic fashion by sinking a 20-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole for a one-stroke victory. The 23-team field at the Tiger-Wave Classic included 10 Top 25 teams and 17 Top 50 teams in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
In addition to her selection as the SEC Women’s Golfer of the Week, McChrystal won the Golfweek.com National Women’s Collegiate Golfer of the Week honor on Tuesday.
She is making a strong case of her own for receiving All-SEC and All-America accolades this season with a scoring average of 73.3 strokes per round and back-to-back Top 10 finishes this spring. McChrystal now ranks No. 22 nationally in the latest Golfweek ranking of the top college players in the country.
