Landry Named LSWA Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — Outfielder Leon Landry of LSU and pitcher James Jones of ULM were named Tuesday as the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Baseball Players of the Week.

Landry a junior from Baton Rouge, was named Hitter of the Week as he hit .538 (7-for-13) in the Tigers’ four victories last week with two triples, four RBI, five runs and a .588 on-base percentage.

Landry became the 11th player in LSU history to hit two triples in a single game Sunday when he collected a pair of three-baggers versus Brown. Landry is batting .368 on the season with two doubles, two triples, 11 runs, 10 RBI and six stolen bases.

Jones, a junior right-hander from Barlow, Ky., threw ULM’s first complete-game shutout since 2004 and faced just one batter over the minimum as he blanked Mississippi Valley State in an 11-0 Warhawk victory. Jones struck out six batters, walked just one and scattered a pair of hits to pick up his first career victory.

Jones picked a runner off second base and retired the Delta Devils in order through the first eight innings of the game — a one-out double in the ninth spoiled his perfect game opportunity.
