Heisman Trophy winner Billy Cannon headlines outstanding list of inductees into the 2010 LSU Alumni Hall of Distinction
LSU’s only Heisman Trophy winner Billy Cannon will headline a group of 10 distinguished LSU alumni who will be inducted into the LSU Alumni Association Hall of Distinction.
The Hall of Distinction induction ceremony and banquet will be held April 16, 2010 at the Lod Cook Alumni Center, located at 3838 West Lakeshore Drive.
Cannon, the winner of the 1959 Heisman Trophy, has been named the 2010 Alumnus of the Year. He will add that distinction to a long list of accolades gathered over the last 50-plus years, including All-American and All-Pro honors on the football field.
Cannon has been recognized most recently by having his name and jersey number (20) permanently enshrined in Tiger Stadium. This honor was precipitated by his 2009 induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.
“This is a signature moment for Billy Cannon,” said Charlie Roberts, president and CEO of the LSU Alumni Association. “He means a great deal to this University. Billy Cannon has been very loyal to LSU and is much more than just a great athlete. The time has come for Billy to be recognized for everything he has done for LSU.”
Marty Sixller, a media tools supervisor with PDI/Dreamworks, has been named Young Alumnus of the Year.
Sixkiller, a 1992 graduate of the LSU College of Design, has flourished in the film industry since his days at LSU. He played a large role in the production of a number of blockbuster films from PDI/Dreamworks, including four Shrek films, both Madagascar films, Antz, Monsters vs. Aliens, Bee Movie and Kung Fu Panda, among many others.
The 2010 induction class is as interesting and as distinguished as any group in the history of the Hall of Distinction. This years class brings together political figures, athletes, artists, doctors, military figures, foreign dignitaries and agriculturists.
“This really is the most diverse group of inductees that we have ever had,” Roberts said. “We have people representing every aspect of the LSU Alumni base.”
The Hall of Distinction is an annual event at which the LSU Alumni Association recognizes alumni who have distinguished themselves and the University through their careers, their personal and civic accomplishments, their volunteer activities, and their loyalty to their alma mater.
