BATON ROUGE – Louisiana Tech’s Amberly Waits and LSU’s Rachele Fico were selected Louisiana Sports Writers Association [LSWA] Softball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week Tuesday as voted upon by the state’s sports information directors.
A freshman hurler for the Tigers, Fico made the most of her four appearances and went 2-0 for the second consecutive weekend as she claimed Tournament MVP honors at the Tiger Invitational. Fico fanned a career-best 10 batters in her lone start of the weekend against Jacksonville State, a 2009 NCAA Super Regional squad. She also earned the win in relief against Houston and posted seven strikeouts in five innings of three-hit relief. For the weekend, Fico racked up 20 strikeouts and limited opponents to only four hits in 13.0 innings of work.
A senior shortstop for the Lady Techsters, Waits produced a .500 hitting clip on the week highlighted by one triple, three home runs, nine runs scored and seven RBIs. She also racked up three multi-hit efforts en route to a 1.188 slugging percentage. Waits’ biggest game of the week came in a 9-7 win over McNeese State when she was 2-for-2 with two home runs and five RBIs. Her 2-run home run tied the game in the third, while her three-run shot gave Tech the lead in the fifth.
It’s the fifth career weekly award for Waits and first for Fico from the LSWA.
