VALDOSTA, Ga. – LSU junior Megan McChrystal and sophomore Tessa Teachman both posted top 10 finishes for the 20th-ranked LSU women’s golf team Tuesday as the delayed Kinderlou Forest Challenge came to its conclusion.
Team had to play the final five holes of the second round halted by darkness on Monday evening before beginning the final 18 holes of the two-day 54-hole event.
McChrystal had a one-over 74 on the final day to go with rounds of even par 73 and two-over 75 to finish at three-over par222, good enough for a tie for seventh place.
Teachman had a two-over 75 to follow back-to-back 74s to finish at four-over 223 and that grabbed a tie for 10th place.
LSU had its best round in the beginning of the tournament for the second straight week, opening with a seven-over par 299 before firing back-to-back rounds of 16-over 308 to finish in a tie for ninth at 39-over 915.
Tulane captured the team title with a 13-over par score of 889, winning by seven shots over Ohio State at 896. The Green Wave posted rounds of 293, 296 and 300 to get the win in the field of 18 teams. Tennessee took third (901), followed by Georgia and Vanderbilt rounding out the top five with equal scores of 903.
Janine Fellows of Tulane won the individual competition with a two-under 217 on rounds of 74, 73 and 70 to move from a tie for sixth to the title. She finished two shots ahead of Marina Alex of Vanderbilt and Marta Silva Zamora of Georgia who were second at even par.
“I am very pleased with the results for Tessa and Megan,” said LSU Coach Karen Bahnsen. “We have to be able to get four consistent scores in the second and third round as we get deeper into the season. We look forward now to working hard for the next week in preparation for our tournament that we are hosting with Tulane at English Turn.
The Tiger-Wave Classic is set for March 11-14 at English Turn in New Orleans. The LSU women’s golf program is joining forces with Tulane to host this event at the former home of the New Orleans PGA stop because of the current renovation project at the University Club where the tournament will return in 2011. A record total of 23 teams will be taking part in this year’s 54-hole event.
