BATON ROUGE – Designated hitter Matt Gaudet of LSU and pitcher Wil Browning of ULM were named Wednesday as the Louisiana Sportswriters Association Baseball Players of the Week.
Gaudet, a senior from Metairie, La., was named Hitter of the Week as he batted .600 (6-for-10) in LSU’s three-game sweep of Centenary last weekend with one double, two homers, six RBI and three runs. He launched two homers in the Tigers’ 25-8 win on Saturday, marking the first multi-HR game of his LSU career.
Gaudet delivered a clutch seventh-inning RBI single on Sunday, expanding LSU’s lead to 2-0 in the eventual 4-0 win.
Browning, a junior right-hander from Kosciusko, Miss., was named Pitcher of the Week after earning a save at Ole Miss on Friday. Browning shut down the Rebel offense over 2.2 innings of perfect relief as Ole Miss suffered its first opening day loss since 1981.
Browning struck out the first three batters he faced – the two he struck out in the seventh inning had the tying run on second base. He then worked a perfect eighth and ninth innings to lead the Warhawks to the victory.
