TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The LSU women’s tennis team dropped a tough match, 6-1, to No. 14 Florida State Sunday at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Lady Tigers (2-5) lost the doubles point, but duo Whitney Wolf and Keri Frankenberger picked up another doubles victory. The tandem defeated FSU’s top pair Federica Suess and Katie Rybakova by the score of 8-4 as they extended their record to 6-1 in the No. 1 slot.
In singles, freshman Frankenberger finished first on court three as she fell to Francesca Segarelli 6-1, 6-2. Nicole Kantor finished next on court four when she lost to Amy Sargeant 6-0, 6-2.
LSU’s Hannah Robinson gave great effort on court five but was not able to take her match as Suess clinched the overall match for the Seminoles 7-6(5), 6-0.
Sophomore Wolf dropped her match to 44th-ranked Lauren McCreless 6-2, 6-3 on court one.
With the ‘Noles (5-4) leading the match at, 5-0, Lady Tiger Kaitlin Burns kept her streak alive as she claimed her first win over a nationally ranked opponent. The Wilmington, N.C., native took down No. 64 Rybakova on court two in a tight three-set battle 2-6, 7-6(4), 10-7. Burns rides on a six-match win streak and holds a 6-0 dual match record.
The match ended on court six when Ebie Wilson fell short to Jessica Sucupira in a three-set affair 7-5, 4-6, 10-5.
“It was a tough loss for us. Florida State is a very solid team,” said head coach Tony Minnis. “We’ve got to keep working on different things and try and get better for our next match.”
The Lady Tigers will be back on the courts Feb. 27 to take on Rice at home in the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium. The match will begin at 1 p.m. CST.
