LOS ANGELES — The 28th-ranked LSU women’s tennis team lost the doubles point and could not bounce back in singles as the Lady Tigers fell to No. 60 San Diego, 4-1, Saturday in the consolation match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend held at USC’s David X. Marks Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif.
“San Diego played well. They played with a lot of hunger and desire. We fought extremely hard in singles, but I don’t think we came to play in doubles,” said head coach Tony Minnis. “It was a tough loss for us. We had opportunities, but we need to capitalize in the future.”
In doubles, Keri Frankenberger and Whitney Wolf finished first on court one as they ousted San Diego’s Juliette Coupez and Alexandra Demidova 8-2. On court two, San Diego responded as the Lady Tiger duo of Kaitlin Burns and Nicole Kantor fell to Laura Claus and Maja Sujica 8-3.
San Diego (2-1) clinched the doubles point on court three when Justine Perl and Maria Raygada defeated Hannah Robinson and Ebie Wilson 8-4.
The Lady Tigers (2-2) played well in singles, but the effort was not enough to upend the Toreros.
Freshman Burns gave the Lady Tigers their only point as she took down Demidova 6-1, 6-2 on court four.
On court two, Kantor came up short to Claus 6-2, 6-4. Lady Tiger Robinson lost her match to Lise Marbach 6-3, 6-4 on court five.
San Diego clinched the overall match on court one as No. 120 Wolf dropped a hotly-contested three-set battle to Coupez 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
When San Diego captured the overall match, Frankenberger and Wilson’s matches on courts three and six were suspended.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action Feb. 7 to take on No. 37 Texas A&M at W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium in Baton Rouge. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. CST.
