SAAC Sponsoring Fundraising Event for Haiti

BATON ROUGE — The LSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is teaming up with Lespwa Worldwide Sunday to sponsor an awareness and fundraising event for Haiti.

The event will take place at 2 p.m. CST inside the Cox Communication Auditorium on the LSU campus. Jeremy Schurke, a missionary in Haiti, will speak giving a first-hand account of Haiti before and after the earthquake.

Courtney Alexander and Natalie leyoub of the LSU soccer team recently traveled to Haiti with Lespwa Worldwide for a week-long mission trip during the Christmas season. The duo spent time in the town of Messailler, where they helped run a Vacation Bible School and assisted in construction projects for the school, including a church and orphanage within the complex in which they stayed. They also helped organize soccer games with the local children.

Dr. Brent Bankston and Dr. Larry Ferachi, orthopedic surgeons who work with the Tiger football team, spent a week in Haiti to aid the medical effort by performing operations after the earthquake.

Lespwa Worldwide is a registered 501 (c) 3 organization and derives its name from the Creole word meaning “hope”. Its mission is to bring hope to the children of Haiti. Donations also can be made online at www.lespwaworldwide.com for those unable to attend Sunday’s SAAC event.
