Women’s Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader

BATON ROUGE — The 29th-ranked LSU women’s tennis team won both its matches, 7-0, Sunday at W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium to open the 2010 dual match season.

The Lady Tigers began the day against UL-Lafayette and took an early lead over the Ragin’ Cajuns as they swept in doubles.

Senior Nicole Kantor and freshman Kaitlin Burns finished first in doubles as they dominated Mia Gordon and Audrey Wooland 8-2.

The Lady Tiger tandem of Whitney Wolf and Keri Frankenberger clinched the doubles point on court one as they took down Julie Mazinova and Briggitt Marcovich in a back and forth affair 8-6.

On court three, Hannah Robinson and Ebie Wilson began their doubles match slowly as Shelby Dufrene and Milou Israel took an early lead. With incredible effort, the Lady Tiger duo rallied back to defeat the Ragin’ Cajun pair 9-8(7-3).

In singles, Kantor finished first on court two as she blanked ULL’s Mazinova 6-0, 6-0. On court one, 120th-ranked Whitney Wolf notched a 6-3, 6-3 victory over the Ragin’ Cajun’s top singles player Wooland.

Senior Robinson clinched the overall match against Gordon 6-1, 6-4 on court five. On court six, Kylie Adamek claimed the fifth point for the Lady Tigers as she beat Tara Vasovic 6-4, 6-2.

Freshman Frankenberger took over Marcovich 7-6(7-0), 6-2 in a competitive two-set duel. Finishing last on court four, Burns took her first set over Israel 7-6(7-5) but dropped her second set 6-2. The Wilmington, N.C., native captured the LSU sweep as she battled to win the tie-breaker 10-8.

Against Prairie View A&M, Wolf and Frankenberger clinched the doubles point 8-0 on court one as the Lady Panthers forfeited their match on court three.  Wolf and Robinson won their match 8-2 on court two.

In singles, the team shut out the Lady Panthers as no Lady Tiger dropped a single set to her opponent. Burns provided the match-clinching point as the team captured its second victory of the day.

“I thought we played well for our first day of matches. There were some nerves, but we played some solid tennis,” said head coach Tony Minnis.

The Lady Tigers will be back in action Friday as they face Auburn at the ITA Kick Off Weekend. First serve is slated for noon CST.
