BATON ROUGE ? After wrapping up the 2009 season last weekend, several runners from the LSU men’s and women’s cross country teams donated a few hours of their time Tuesday to read to students at Delmont Elementary in Baton Rouge.

Runners participating in the afternoon of service included Amber Abbott, Laura Carleton, Richard Chautin, Jessica Deutsch, Amal Esmail, Andy Florek and Hope Phelps.

“I thought it would be a really great opportunity for us to take advantage of this week between cross country and track seasons to go and give back to the community when we would normally have to be at practice,” Carleton said. “The best part was how enthusiastic all the kids were to have us come to their classrooms. They all wanted a chance to talk to us and loved that we were from LSU.”

Reading to children at local elementary schools is another one of the many ways LSU student-athletes extend their commitment to community in the Baton Rouge area.
