Volleyball Wins National Play of the Week

LEXINGTON, Ky. — LSU was the seventh recipient of the Volleyball Market/American Volleyball Coaches Association [AVCA] Play of the Week as announced Wednesday by the governing body of collegiate volleyball. The award-winning play came during LSU’s match at Kentucky back on October 24.

The 29-second rally highlights the defensive prowess of the Tigers. Kentucky unleashed two attack attempts, both of which are dug by LSU. On the third Wildcat attempt, a cross-court bullet, the left-back defender Lauren DeGirolamo gets her hand on the ball, which then ricochets off the leg of libero Lauren Waclawczyk and is ultimately sent over the net for yet another save. The Tigers earn a point on the ensuing Wildcats’ attempt, which sailed long.

The play, which can be viewed on the AVCA’s YouTube channel by clicking here, http://tinyurl.com/yedw2ly, will join the other finalists in becoming eligible for the Volleyball Market/AVCA Play of the Year, to be announced at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet prior to the Final Four on Friday, Dec. 18, at the AVCA Convention in Tampa.

LSU opens the second leg of a four-match road swing Friday at No. 10 Florida. The Tigers and Gators enter the match tied for second place and both are a half-match behind Kentucky in the overall SEC standings. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. CT and live stats will be available on LSUsports.net.

The match will be televised by Fox Sports Net Florida but is unavailable in the Baton Rouge area. Fans also can follow in-match updates of the five-time SEC Western Division champions via www.twitter.com/lsuvolleyball.
