BATON ROUGE — Southeastern Louisiana quarterback Tyler Beatty and defensive back Re’Keem Wilson along with return specialist Trindon Holliday of LSU captured the weekly Louisiana Sports Writers Association football player honors announced on Monday.
Southeastern was a 25-21 winner over No. 12 Central Arkansas that sent the Southland Conference into a four-way tie for first, while No. 9 LSU was an easy 42-0 winner over Tulane.
Holliday returned three punts for a total of 105 yards in the Tulane win for LSU. The senior had two returns for 50 yards each, one in the first quarter and the other in the third quarter. His second 50-yard punt return went to the Tulane 20-yard line, setting up and LSU touchdown three plays later. Holliday rank his career punt return total of 475yards, which ties as the 10th best total in school history.
Beatty made his first collegiate start in place of injured starter Brian Babin in the game, throwing a pair of first-half touchdowns, including a 61-yarder to Chris Wilson that gave the Lions a 10-0 lead. His 16-yard scoring pass to Wilson with 8:18 remaining was the eventual game winner, helping the Lions overcome a 19-17 deficit. The junior from Pflugerville, Texas, rushed for 48 yards, including a 16-yard scramble on third and 12 that eventually led to a Jeff Turner field goal. Beatty had a passer efficiency rating of 165.28, completing 23-of-35 for 297 yards and three touchdowns.
Wilson, a junior from Franklinton, picked off two fourth-quarter passes, including one in the end zone with 54 seconds that helped preserve the Southeastern victory. He also added eight tackles and a pass breakup in the contest. He returned his first interception 31 yards to the UCA 28 which led to Southeastern taking a 25-19 lead three plays later. His final interception came on fourth and four after UCA had driven to the SLU nine-yard line.
