Golfers Continue Fall Season in Georgia

BATON ROUGE — The LSU men’s golf team is back in action for the third weekend in a row as it continues its fall season in Macon, Ga., where it will compete in the third-annual Brickyard Collegiate Championship beginning Saturday at the Brickyard at Riverside Golf Club.

The 54-hole championship is scheduled for three days with one round being contested Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The course will play to a par 72 and 7,175 yards for the championship.

This year’s Brickyard Collegiate Championship features a strong 15-team field that includes five teams ranked in the latest Golfweek Top 25 released earlier this week.

Joining the Tigers are No. 7 Florida State, No. 14 North Florida, No. 16 Michigan, No. 21 Georgia Tech, No. 24 Chattanooga, Augusta State, Charlotte, Clemson, Georgia, Mercer, Ole Miss, Penn State, Virginia Commonwealth and Virginia Tech. The Mercer Bears will play host to the event.

“We’re looking for some better play from the back end of our lineup heading into our third tournament of the season. With that said, we’ve got a team full of talented players and they will get it going,” said LSU head coach Chuck Winstead. “The Brickyard will be a good challenge for guys as none of us have seen this course before. We’re competing against a very solid field and are looking forward to the week.”

The Tigers are coming off an eighth-place team finish in the 15-team field at the Gary Koch Invitational a week ago after earning a 10th-place finish in its season opener at the PING/Golfweek Invitational.

The Tigers will be led once again by junior All-American John Peterson, who earned an impressive third-place finish in the final individual standings at the Gary Koch Invitational. Peterson fired rounds of 67, 67 and 70 to finish with a career-low 54-hole tournament score of 12-under par 204.

Peterson boasts a team-leading 71.3 scoring average in two tournament starts this season. Peterson will be joined in the five-man lineup this week by fellow juniors Andrew Loupe and Clayton Rotz, as well as two sophomores in Josh Jones and Sang Yi. Sophomore Austin Gutgsell will compete as an individual.

The Tigers are paired with Chattanooga and North Florida in Saturday’s opening round and will tee off on the back nine beginning at 8:10 a.m. CT. Live scoring of the event will be provided by Golfstat and can be found online by logging on to www.golfstat.com.
