BATON ROUGE — The LSU soccer team will head into the final weekend of the 2009 regular season ranked among the Top 20 programs in the country for the fifth-straight week as it is tabbed as high as No. 16 in the National Soccer Coaches Association Top 25 poll released Monday afternoon.
The Tigers (11-4-3, 7-2-1 SEC) are coming off their second win this season over a Top 10 opponent with a 1-0 victory over then 10th-ranked South Carolina at the LSU Soccer Complex on Sunday.
The Tigers are also ranked No. 18 nationally in the latest Soccer Times Top 25 and No. 19 in this week’s Soccer American Top 25 announced Monday.
LSU is in position to win its third-straight SEC Western Division championship on Friday night when the club travels to Fayetteville, Ark., to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks in a match scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. CT. The Tigers control their own destiny in the SEC West and can secure yet another division crown with a win against the Razorbacks on Friday night.
The Tigers are still alive in the chase for the overall SEC championship as they are in second place in the overall SEC standings with 22 points in league play. Florida holds the top spot with 23 points in the SEC.
