Tennis Wins 10 Matches at Southern Regional

NEW ORLEANS — The LSU men’s tennis team tallied 10 wins on the opening day of the Wilson/ITA Southern Regional on Thursday hosted dually by Tulane and UNO.

Juniors Sebastian Carlsson, Julien Gauthier and Cody Loup each went undefeated in singles to move on to day two of the event.

Carlsson notched two swift straight-set victories, beginning in the round of 64. The Uppsala, Sweden native advanced over UL-Lafayette’s Yanick Mandl 6-2, 6-3, and moved on to take down UNO’s Benjamin Bouhana in the Round of 32, 6-4, 6-2.

Loup also picked up two wins. The Baton Rouge native defeated Samford’s Carl Abalos in the round of 128 before rolling on to defeat Tulane’s Joe Young 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in his second match.

Gauthier advanced into the round of 32 as he defeated Troy’s Aurelien Tave by a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 (5) mark.

Additionally, Neal Skupski, Mark Bowtell and James Turbervill each picked up a singles victory.

Two Tiger tandems were able to clench a victory in the doubles draw before inclement weather forced the remainder of matches to Friday.

Skupski and freshman Stefan Szacinski blanked Centenary’s Micah Threadgill and Michael Reeks 8-0, and Carlsson and Gauthier teamed up to defeat Auburn’s Nick Maurillo and Michael Wardell, 8-3.

“We got a lot of matches in and had some good performances,” LSU head coach Jeff Brown said. “As coaches, we saw some things we still need to work on, but the guys that got through had solid victories”

Matches continue at 8 a.m. CDT. Gauthier will face Mississippi State’s Chris Doerr and Loup will square off against Auburn’s Alex Stamchev to kick off Friday’s competition in the singles round of 32 at UNO’s University Tennis Center.
