Men’s Tennis Begins ITA Regional Play

NEW ORLEANS — Eight members of the LSU men’s tennis team will travel to New Orleans to compete in the Wilson/ITA South Regional Championship scheduled Thursday through Sunday at Tulanes Goldring Tennis Complex and UNO’s University Tennis Center.

LSU’s Mark Bowtell, Sebastian Carlsson, Julien Gauthier, Cody Loup, David Roberts, Neal Skupski, Stefan Szacinski and James Turbervill will each compete in the tournament, which will include 80 players from 14 schools competing in both singles and doubles.

Of the 80 participants, four nationally-ranked singles players enter the brackets. Alabama’s 10th-ranked Saketh Myneni, Auburn’s 54th-ranked Tim Puetz, Southern Miss’ 67th-ranked Patricio Alvarado and Mississippi State’s 83rd-ranked Artem Ilyushin will all compete in the singles draw.

Four nationally-ranked duos will also compete in the tournament.

“We are looking for another breakout performance from one of our guys,” LSU head coach Jeff Brown said. “Julien stepped out early on, and Neal had a great run at the All-American. Each time someone steps up, a piece of the puzzle falls into place.”

Other schools competing in the tournament include: Alabama, Auburn, Centenary, Louisiana-Lafayette, Mississippi State, UNO, Samford, South Alabama,Southern Miss, Ole Miss, Troy, Tulane and UAB.

Competition begins at 8 a.m. CDT on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, matches commence at 10 a.m. with the final rounds slated for 5 p.m.
