Banks Named SEC Freshman of the Week

BATON ROUGE — After scoring a pair of goals in LSU’s 4-0 win over Mississippi State on Sunday afternoon, freshman striker Carlie Banks has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for the second time this season for her performance.

Banks scored the game-winning goal for the Tigers in the 11th minute of play before adding a second goal in the 22nd minute of the match to lead the LSU attack.

A native of Peachtree City, Ga., Banks has proven to be the top freshman in the SEC this season as all of her six goals scored have come in SEC play. That ties her for the league lead in goals scored in SEC play, while she is also the third-leading point scorer in SEC games with 12 points in eight league matches.

Not only that, but her three game-winning goals in SEC play is a league best as no other player has more than two game-winning goals to her credit in conference action.

Banks and the rest of the LSU Tigers are currently tied for the top spot in the overall SEC standings with South Carolina as both sides have posted matching 6-1-1 records for 19 points in conference play. Florida follows closely behind in third place with 17 points on the league table, while Georgia is in fourth place at 15 points and Ole Miss is in fifth place at 14 points.

The Tigers return to the pitch on Thursday as they travel to Gainesville, Fla., to take on Florida in a match scheduled for a 6 p.m. CT kickoff. They will then return home Sunday to play host to South Carolina in a match scheduled for a 2 p.m. kickoff. Sunday’s match will also be broadcast live on ESPNU.
