BATON ROUGE — LSU soccer players Rachel Yepez and Natalie Ieyoub took a break from their training schedule this week as they spent time at University Terrace Elementary School on Tuesday afternoon mentoring students as part of the Kids Hope USA Program.
Yepez spent an hour reading a Halloween magazine and working on math assignments with her adopted student, while Ieyoub also spent time with her student reading and playing board games.
The LSU soccer team has adopted University Terrace Elementary School this year through the Kids Hope USA Program. Members of the team alternate going to the school each week as they help mentor their own student during the hour-long visit by playing games, reading and helping with their homework.
“It’s a great experience for our team to be able to help the children at University Terrace,” Yepez said. “It is fun to talk with their teachers and try to focus on what they need help with the most. It’s especially a lot of fun getting to know these kids and making a difference in their lives.”
The LSU soccer team is well known for its community service efforts as it has been honored by the Tiger Athletic Foundation as the school’s recipient of the Tiger Cup in each of the last two years for its pursuit of excellence in local community service projects.
