The LSU men’s basketball team claimed the 2009 Southeastern Conference championship, winning 27 games and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. This year’s team will be led by senior first-team All-SEC performer Tasmin Mitchell with Bo Spencer back for his junior season. The team’s other senior is Alex Farrer.
Head coach Trent Johnson enters his second season at LSU after earning 2009 SEC Coach of the Year honors.
The Tigers open the regular season on Nov. 13 against UL-Monroe and then host the South regional of the pre-season National Invitation Tournament on Nov. 16 and 17 needing wins on both nights to go to the semifinals in Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The Lady Tigers return four starters and nine letterwinners from a team that advanced to the second round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament and finished second in the SEC regular season standings. LSU is ranked No. 9 in the Sporting News Preseason Top 25 that was released this week.
Headlining the list of returners is 2010 National Player of the Year candidate Allison Hightower. Hightower, a senior guard, led LSU in six categories a season ago and will begin the new season on watch lists for the Wade Trophy and John Wooden Award. The Lady Tigers also return 2009 SEC Co-Freshman of the Year LaSondra Barrett.
Head coach Van Chancellor enters his third season with the program and his 22nd overall at the collegiate level. Chancellor boasts 489 career collegiate victories, just 11 shy of becoming the 24th active Division I coach to obtain 500 wins.
The Lady Tigers welcome Centenary to the Maravich Center in the season-opener on Nov. 15. LSU hosts the inaugural Sue Gunter Classic, Dec. 15-16, before beginning its SEC slate in January.
