BREMERTON, Wash. — The 12th-ranked LSU men’s golf team earned a 10th-place finish in its season opener Monday at the 2009 PING/Golfweek Invitational as it posted a team score of 28-over par 316 for a 54-hole score of 44-over 908 at the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club.
The Tigers opened the championship on Monday with scores of 11-over 299 in the first round and 5-over 293 in the second round, finishing the day in a tie for third place with a 36-hole score of 16-over 592.
Junior All-American John Peterson led the way for the Tigers in the final round as he fired a 2-over 74 to finish the two-day event in a tie for 25th place overall with a 54-hole score of 8-over 224.
Fellow junior Andrew Loupe, who finished the first day of competition in sole possession of second place after blistering the course with rounds of 1-over 73 and 2-under 70 on Monday, wrapped up his first event of the season with a score of 7-over 79 to finish in a tie for 12th place at 6-over 222.
Sophomore Sang Yi finished the championship in a tie for 57th place with a three-day total of 17-over 224 while senior Brent Blaum followed two shots back in a tie for 63rd place with a 54-hole score of 19-over 235. Sophomore Josh Jones tied for 68th place at 23-over 239 for the championship.
The No. 2-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys were the only team to finish under par as they ran away with the team championship at this year’s PING/Golfweek Invitational. Oklahoma State fired a 2-under 862 in three rounds to earn an impressive 22-stroke victory over tournament host Washington for the crown. The Arizona State Sun Devils finished 27 shots back in third place at 25-over 889.
Not only did the Cowboys win the team championship, but they made a clean sweep of the top three spots on the leaderboard as sophomore All-American Peter Uihlein took home medalist honors with at score of 5-under 211. Morgan Hoffman was second at 3-under 213 and Trent Whitekiller was third at even 216.
The Tigers will return to action next weekend as they make the trip to Tampa, Fla., to tee it up in the Gary Koch Invitational beginning Saturday at Old Memorial Golf Club.
