BATON ROUGE — In what may be an unprecedented result, the members of the voting committee named LSU junior Chad Jones both the defensive and special teams player of the week as selected by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association on Monday.
Tulane flanker Jeremy Williams, who had an outstanding game for the Green Wave on Saturday, was named the offensive player of the week.
Jones was named the national defensive player of the week by the Walter Camp Foundation on Sunday after his efforts in the 30-26 win over Mississippi State. He recorded seven tackles (four solo) and a pass break up on defense. He keyed a last-minute goal line stand by the Tigers that helped preserve the victory with a PBU on 3rd and goal from the one-yard line and then he tackled Mississippi State quarterback Tyson lee an inch short of the end zone on fourth down.
On special teams, Jones returned a punt 93 yards for a touchdown to open the fourth quarter. The 93-yard return ranks second in LSU history and proved to be the winning points for the Tigers.
Williams had a big Saturday afternoon for Tulane at the Superdome, catching 10 balls for a career high 222 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Green Wave to its first win of the year with a 42-32 victory over McNeese State. Williams was the lone Wave player to catch a pass and registered Tulane’s entire receiving yardage. He also ran the ball four times for 10 yards for 232 all-purpose yards.
His 222 receiving yards were the third-best single game effort in Tulane history and the seventh 200-yard game by a Tulane player. Williams, a senior from Baytown, Texas, chalked up 106 yards by half time and made a 40-yard finger-tip catch on the goal line on a third and two play for the Wave. He also hauled in a touchdown pass in the first quarter. Williams recorded his seventh 100-yard receiving game of his career, which moves him into sixth place on Tulane’s all-time list.
