Lady Tigers Wrap Up Day 2 of Tournament Play

BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s tennis team finished day two Saturday of the Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana and the Rice Invitational hosted by Rice with two Lady Tigers as finalists in their flight championship.

At the Hoosier Classic, Nicole Kantor advanced to the Flight 1 finals after taking down Mississippi State’s No. 1 player Olesya Tsigvintseva 6-3, 6-3. Kantor will face Antea Huljev of Kansas State for her final match.

Freshman Ebie Wilson played with phenomenal effort as she ousted Myriam Sopel of Indiana in a three-set duel 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5). The Mobile, Ala. native will battle Indiana’s Lindsey Stuckey in Sunday’s match.

After a hard-fought match, Kaitlin Burns fell to Leslie Hureau of Indiana 6-3, 6-2.

Lady Tiger Kylie Adamek picked up her first win of the season as she beat MSU’s Elizabeth Hall 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles, Kantor and Wilson defeated Maria Guerreiro and Evgeniya Vertesheva of Indiana 8-2 and then took down Memphis’s Courtney Collins and Ashley Murdock 8-6. Collins and Murdock defeated Burns and Adamek 8-1 to advance to the consolation final.

“It was another good day for Lady Tiger tennis in Indiana. Ebie had a really tough match but played very well and fought her way through,” said head coach Tony Minnis. “I’m really proud of Nicole for playing an outstanding match against Mississippi State’s best player in Flight 1. We’re looking forward to a good day tomorrow.”

At the Rice Invitational, sophomore Whitney Wolf retired her match against Marie Pier Huet of Oklahoma. Keri Frankenberger fell to Rice’s Alex Rasch in a close match 7-6  (3), 7-6 (6), and Sloane Mathis dropped her match to Jessica Lange of Tulane 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles, Wolf and Frankenberger came up short to DePaul’s Gia McNight and Katarina Milinkovic 9-7. Paired with Mecklin Regan of Rice, Mathis lost to Kiki Kruse and Mariana Perez of Texas State 8-4.

“It was a tough day. The girls fought hard, and we have a lot to prove for the last day of the tournament tomorrow,” said assistant coach Lisa Jackson.

Only singles competition will be played for the final day of both tournaments. First serve is set for Sunday at 8:30 CT in Bloomington, Ind., and Houston, Texas.
