BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s tennis team will gear up for another day of tournament play as members of the team picked up singles and doubles victories Friday at the Hoosier Classic hosted by Indiana in Bloomington, Ind., and the Rice Invitational hosted by Rice in Houston, Texas.
At the Hoosier classic, senior Nicole Kantor led the team as she beat Indiana’s No. 1 player Katya Zapadalova 6-1, 7-5. Kantor will face Olesya Tsigvintseva of Mississippi State for an SEC match-up Saturday.
Freshman Kaitlin Burns added another win to her record as she defeated Kansas State’s Ana Gomez Aleman 6-2, 6-1 while Ebie Wilson took her match over Maryna Chumak of Kansas State 6-2, 6-3.
Lady Tiger Kylie Adamek dropped her match to Nina Sertic of KSU 3-6, 3-6 in a round-robin singles match.
In doubles, Kantor and Wilson paired-up to take down Andrea Arques-Garcia and Marjorie Ondeck of Memphis 8-4. The duo then fell to Leslie Hureau and Myriam Sopel in a tight 6-8 match.
Adamek and Burns ousted Kansas State’s Karla Bonacic and Chumak 8-4 but then dropped a close match to Charlotte Martin and Megan Matter of Indiana 6-8.
“I was really pleased with the effort today. I thought we did a very good job of competing and playing hard,” said head coach Tony Minnis. “I was really impressed with the freshman and with Nicole Kantor‘s victory over Indiana’s No. 1 girl.”
In Houston, Texas, sophomore Whitney Wolf battled SMU’s Shazoda Hatamova for a competitive 7-5, 6-2 victory. Keri Frankenberger, a Gainesville, Fla., native, collected a 6-1, 6-3 win over Caroline Dedering of UT-San Antonio.
Lady Tiger Sloane Mathis notched her first win of her senior campaign as she beat Texas State’s Jennifer Nowland 7-5, 6-4.
Partners Wolf and Frankenberger claimed a win over Julia Wiegand and Maya Zein of Texas with a score of 8-3. The duo then fell to SMU’s Nicole Briceno and Hatamova 5-8.
Paired with Nowland, Mathis lost her doubles match to Tulane’s Jessica Lange and Sharon Siegel 4-8. In the consolation, the twosome fell 0-8 to UT-San Antonio’s Nicci Yvanovich and DePaul’s Cali Gustafson.
“Overall I am satisfied with the effort today. We need to do a better job of coming out for doubles. In singles, we had a couple of good wins, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they will play tomorrow,” said assistant head coach Lisa Jackson.
The Lady Tigers will continue to play Saturday at 9:00 a.m. CT in Bloomington and 8:30 a.m. in Houston.
