BATON ROUGE — LSU continues its participation in the third annual SEC Together We CAN Food Drive by collecting food and financial donations at different athletic events this weekend. All proceeds benefit the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.
Fans have four opportunities to get involved, highlighted by this weekend’s soccer matches against Georgia and Tennessee. Other chances to donate include Swimming & Diving’s Intrasquad scrimmage Friday at the Natatorium along with Cross Country’s LSU Invitational Saturday at Highland Road Park.
LSU softball kicked off the event by gathering items at both volleyball matches last weekend. The gymnastics program also collected donations at its banquet honoring the 2009 Super Six squad.
“It’s nice to raise money for an SEC event and go support our fellow Tigers,” softball junior Ashley Applegate said. “This year’s food drive is off to a much better start than last year thanks to our community who continues to shower us with their support.”
The SEC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) raised more than 150,000 pounds of food as well as donations that benefited local food banks and shelters during the 2008 event.
For those fans wanting to donate but not able to make it to this weekend’s athletic events, barrels will be at the front entrance of the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes in addition to the Athletic Training Room through September 27.
