Jasper Named an LSWA Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE — Louisiana Tech quarterback Ross Jenkins, Grambling State defensive end Christian Anthony and place kicker Josh Jasper of LSU earned the nod from the panel of 13 voters selecting the Louisiana Sports Writers Association football players of the week announced on Monday.

The weekly vote by the LSWA panel is made based on nominations from the sports information personnel of the state football-playing institutions.

LSU’s Jasper remained perfect for his career in field goals at 7-of-7 as he booted a career-best 52-yarder as time expired in the first half against Louisiana-Lafayette. It was Jasper’s first career kick beyond 40 yards and the longest made field goal by an LSU player since Colt David booted a 53-yards against Georgia Tech in the 2008 Chick-Fil-a-Bowl.

Jenkins, a junior from Houston, was 21-of-30 passing with a career best 357 yards and two touchdowns in Tech’s 48-13 win over Nicholls State. Jenkins became the first Louisiana Tech quarterback to throw for over 300 yards in a game in two years. Jenkins led the Louisiana Teach offense in scoring a touchdown in five consecutive possessions in the first half.

Anthony, a senior from Birmingham, Ala., earned the W. C. Gordon Classic defensive MVP honor for his play in the 27-17 win over Jackson State as well as SWAC defensive player of the week honors. Anthony had eight tackles, including seven solo stop with 2.5 tackles for loss that totaled 30 yards with a sack. He also had an interception return for 30 yards and a touchdown to help propel the Grambling Tigers to victory.
