NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The LSU women’s tennis team notched five wins as they completed the second day of competition at the Southeastern Conference Fall Classic on Saturday hosted by Vanderbilt at the Currey Tennis Center.
The Tigers notched two wins as they completed doubles when both duos of Whitney Wolf and Keri Frankenberger as well as Kaitlin Burns and Ebie Wilson drove to victory.
Wolf and Frankenberger ended their doubles run on a solid note as the tandem cruised to an 8-2 victory over Auburn’s Paulina Schippers and Caroline Thornton and marked their second win of the tournament.
Burns and Wilson also saw their second victory as they defeated Mississippi State duo Valeria Makarycheva and Elizabeth Hall 8-2.
“We are happy about the way we competed and each of the freshmen have stepped up,” LSU assistant coach Lisa Jackson said. “As we finished up the doubles portion Whitney and Keri performed well. Doubles will be an important aspect to the team and each of the duos showed they could compete at a high level.”
LSU also made an impact in singles as Wolf and Burns each marked a win.
Wolf defeated Tennessee’s Rosalia Alda in a three-set standoff 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. The Pride, La. native will take on Laura Van de Stroet of Ole Miss in her final singles match of the tournament.
Burns’ victory came over Auburn’s Plamena Kurteva. After blanking Kurteva in the first set, a narrow second-set margin of 7-5 decided the LSU newcomer’s victory. Burns will take on Tennessee’s Kata Szekely to close out singles competition.
The SEC Fall Classic concludes on Sunday with one final singles matchup for each of the players beginning at 9 a.m. CDT.
