NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Freshman Keri Frankenberger led the LSU women’s tennis team with two wins on Friday at the Southeastern Conference Fall Classic hosted by Vanderbilt at the Currey Tennis Center.
Frankenberger, a Gainesville, Fla. native, defeated Tennessee’s Katie Lee in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. The LSU newcomer teamed up with sophomore Whitney Wolf for doubles to produce her second win.
Although Frankenberger and Wolf dropped their first match to Vanderbilt’s Catherine Newman and Heather Steinbauer, the Tiger tandem took their second match after cruising to an 8-3 victory over Ole Miss duo Abigail Guthrie and Gabriela Rangel.
Freshman Kaitlin Burns of Wilmington, N.C. also notched a singles victory after a close encounter with Georgia’s Lara Fakhoury. Burns picked up the first set 7-5 and as an answer Fakhoury posted a 6-3 mark to take the second set. Burns returned fire as she blasted to a 6-3 third-set victory to take the match.
“We are really happy with the competitiveness shown by all the players,” LSU assistant coach Lisa Jackson said. “Being the first day and with three freshmen, they each showed great composure. Tomorrow we are hoping to have even better results.”
Competition resumes on Saturday at 10 a.m. CDT, beginning with doubles.
