TULSA, Okla. — LSU junior All-American John Peterson fired rounds of 1-under par 69 and 8-over 78 in two rounds of stroke play to qualify for the match play competition at the 109th United States Amateur Championship beginning Wednesday at Southern Hills Country Club.
Peterson will compete as the No. 53 seed in match play after finishing in a tie for 45th place with a 36-hole score of 7-over 147 during the stroke play qualifying held Monday and Tuesday.
The Fort Worth, Texas, native will square off against Georgia Tech First-Team All-American and No. 12 seed Cameron Tringale in Wednesday’s first round of match play. The match will begin at 10 a.m. CT at Southern Hills Country Club.
Peterson was just one shot out of the lead in stroke play qualifying after firing a 1-under par 69 in Monday’s opening round before falling back into a tie for 45th place with an 8-over 78 in Tuesday’s second round. He has qualified for the match play competition in his first career trip to the most prestigious amateur championship hosted by the United States Golf Association.
With a win over Tringale in the opening round of match play on Wednesday, Peterson would earn a spot in the second round to be held Thursday at 8:40 a.m.
Fellow junior Andrew Loupe also competed in stroke play qualifying at the U.S. Amateur but did not advance to the match play competition. After opening with an 11-over 81 in the first round, Loupe fired a 2-over 72 in the second round to finish in a tie for 160h place at 13-over 153.
