BATON ROUGE — Paul Mainieri, head coach of the National Champion LSU Tigers baseball team, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch and sign autographs Friday at the New Orleans Zephyrs game versus Colorado Springs.
Mainieri will throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the 7 p.m. game between the Zephyrs and Sky Sox at Zephyr Field in Metairie, La.
The Zephyrs are the Triple-A affiliate of the Florida Marlins. The team’s executive director is Ron Maestri, Mainieri’s college coach at the University of New Orleans in 1978-79.
In his third season at LSU, Mainieri led the Tigers to their sixth national championship, and their first since 2000, by beating Texas in the College World Series.
The 56 wins by the 2009 club was one shy of the school record, set in 1997.
Mainieri began his coaching career in 1983. In 27 seasons at the helm of St. Thomas, Air Force, Notre Dame and LSU, he has a career record of 998-554-6.
