BATON ROUGE — The LSU volleyball team kick-started its 2009 season Tuesday with a pair of workouts at the Carl Maddox Field House. The Tigers practiced for three hours in the morning followed by a four-hour afternoon session.

“The team was extremely prepared and did an excellent job of starting the 2009 season on a positive note,” head coach Fran Flory said. “We put the players in drills that tested their conditioning, fitness and mental toughness. The first thing we wanted to figure out is are we fit and are we ready? We’re definitely both.”

LSU will practice for 12 consecutive days before beginning classes begin Monday, August 24. Flory also commented upon the team’s ability to accomplish more drills during the first day of the 2009 preseason than ever before and what the focus is for the upcoming week of practice.

“We have to figure out who is going to handle our first contact,” Flory said. “We have a nice handle on our offense returning from last year’s squad. Our goal for the first week is get as many reps in as possible and to identify the players who are going to be primary ball control people.”

Freshmen Take PMAC Banner Photos

LSU photographer Steve Franz was on hand prior to Tuesday afternoon’s practice session to take a variety of action pictures featuring the Tiger freshman class at the Maravich Center. The photos will be used for the banners that display the 2009 Tigers on the mezzanine level of the arena.
