BATON ROUGE — LSU senior All-American Malorie Rutledge has been recognized as a National Player of the Year candidate by the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis once again this fall as she was named to the organization’s Hermann Trophy Watch List on Tuesday afternoon.
This marks the second year in a row that Rutledge has been a candidate to receive the Hermann Trophy as she joins 45 student-athletes from across the country on this year’s watch list.
Considered the highest honor in intercollegiate soccer, the recipient of the Hermann Trophy is selected by Division I head coaches who are current members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. A list of 15 semifinalists will be announced by the committee in November, while three finalists will be announced prior to the start of the NCAA College Cup in early December.
The Hermann Trophy is college soccer’s equivalent to the Heisman Trophy, which is awarded annually to the nation’s premier college football player.
Rutledge, a senior from Sharpsburg, Ga., is the most decorated soccer player in the history of the program as she was a consensus All-American and the SEC Offensive Player of the Year in 2008. She received All-America honors from such organizations as TopDrawerSoccer.com, Soccer America and Soccer Buzz while picking up her second career First-Team All-SEC honor last fall.
Rutledge is looking to retain her title as the SEC Player of the Year as she is the only player from the SEC included on this year’s Hermann Trophy Watch List.
She has helped fuel LSU’s rise to national prominence as the Tigers enter the 2009 season as the two-time defending SEC Western Division champions after making back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and 2008. The Tigers have also been a staple in the national rankings over the last two seasons.
