BATON ROUGE — LSU women’s tennis head coach Tony Minnis led his Southern Girls 18s National Team to capture the USTA National Teams Championship title for the first time in a decade Friday in Novato, Calif.
The Southern section defeated the Texas section, 4-3, in a hotly-contested match. To advance to the final round of the tournament, the Southern section took down the Southwest section, the Intermountain section and the Southern California section.
“I’m very proud of the girls for coming together and competing as a team,” said Minnis. “They played some close matches but found a way to pull it out.”
“It was an honor to coach these quality players.”
As LSU’s all-time winningest coach, Minnis has led his teams to over 250 victories and is a four-time Southwest Regional Coach of the Year, two-time Louisiana Coach of the Year and one-time Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year.
