BATON ROUGE — By winning Monday’s sectional qualifier at Lake Charles Country Club in Lake Charles, La., rising junior Andrew Loupe became the second LSU Tiger to earn the right to compete at the 109th United States Amateur Championship to be held later this month.
Loupe joins All-American teammate John Peterson in the field of the nation’s most prestigious amateur championship sponsored by the United States Golf Association, which will be held at historic Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., from Aug. 24-30.
Like Peterson, this will mark Loupe’s first career appearance at the U.S. Amateur Championship as it is also the fifth year in a row that the LSU men’s golf program will be represented in the event.
After opening with a 2-under par 70 in Monday’s opening round, Loupe followed with an impressive 7-under 65 in the afternoon to win the sectional qualifier by four strokes with a 36-hole score of 9-under 135. Grady Brame of Hammond, La., finished in a distant second place with a two-round total of 5-under par 39. Dustin Morris of Crosby, Texas, grabbed the third automatic qualifying spot at 4-under 40.
Loupe continues to impress this summer as he also took home the title at the Louisiana Golf Association Amateur Championship in June before advancing to the quarterfinal round of the match play competition at the prestigious North & South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst No. 2 last month.
