ST. LOUIS, Mo. — LSU women’s golfer Megan McChrystal put herself back in the match play bracket for the second straight year, finishing three shots above the cut line after 36-holes of qualifying in the 109th U.S. Women’s Amateur at the Old Warson Country Club.
McChrystal now joins 63 other golfers in the heads-up single elimination match play on Wednesday that will lead to a champion being crowned on Sunday.
The Stuart, Fla., native did not have as good a day on Tuesday as she did in her one-over 72 opening round on Monday, but it was plenty good to advance to match play where last year she advanced to the round of 16. The course average overall was about 1.3 strokes better in the second round which allowed her 72 from Monday to put her in a great position going into Tuesday’s play.
McChrystal had 13 pars and five bogeys on the second day, playing the par 3’s in two-over and the par 4’s in four-over. McChrystal finished at 76 and at 148, six over for the qualifying 36 holes, three shots ahead of 64th place which was nine-over 151. Six players tied for the final spot and will play off for one spot prior to the start of match play.
McChrystal will be out in the third to last match of the first round at 2:20 p.m. CDT against Jennifer Song of Ann Arbor, Mich. It is a very difficult pairing for McChrystal as she will be facing a golfer who in her freshman year at USC finished second in the NCAA Championships and earlier this summer was the low amateur in the United States Women’s Open and was the 2009 champion in the Women’s United States Amateur Public Links.
The Golf Channel will cover the first round of match play from 3-5 p.m. on Wednesday.
