ST. LOUIS, Mo. — LSU junior-to-be Megan McChrystal put herself in good position Monday after the first round of medal qualifying in the 109th United States Women’s Amateur, firing a 1-over round of 72 on the Old Warson Country Club.
McChrystal, a second-team All-American for the Lady Tigers from Stuart, Fla., was exempt from qualifying for the event after finishing in the final 16 in last year’s amateur. She has to finish in the top 64 in the 36-holes of qualifying that concludes on Tuesday to continue.
McChrystal had three birdies and four bogeys in her round over the par 71 course, playing the par fours and par fives in even par. Her three birdies all came on par-4 holes.
McChrystal is in a group tied for 13th place. Six golfers were under par, led by first-day leader Amy Anderson of Oxbow, N.D., who shot 3-under 68 and was the champion in last month’s U.S. Girls Junior Amateur tournament.
There are 71 golfers at 5-over or under after the first round, with 5-over 76 tied for 57th position.
Match play begins on Wednesday after the cut to 64 and there will be two rounds of coverage each day on the Golf Channel through Sunday’s championship round. McChrystal tees off the first hole at 12:41 p.m. on Tuesday. Scoring updates are available at www.uswamateur.org.
