BATON ROUGE — Five Lady Tigers were named Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as announced by the organization Friday.

Megan Falcon, Nicole Kantor, Sloane Mathis, Hannah Robinson and Staten Spencer all earned varsity letters, achieved a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year and have been enrolled in LSU for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year) to receive this title.

Tied with Alabama, LSU’s five Scholar-Athletes led the SEC. Mississippi State was second with four players, while Florida and Kentucky tied with three players. Ole Miss and South Carolina each had two, and Georgia had one.

Spencer, the recipient of an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship, received the Scholar-Athlete honor for the fifth consecutive season as she is the only Lady Tiger in the program’s history to achieve this accomplishment.

Falcon, a three-time singles All-American, completed her senior year with a second Scholar-Athlete honor, while Kantor, Mathis and Robinson earned their third.

“It’s quite an honor to have Scholar-Athletes on our team, but it’s especially an honor to lead the SEC,” said head coach Tony Minnis. “It just shows how committed our team is to academics, and I’m very proud of the girls.”

The Lady Tigers will kick off the 2009-10 season on Sept. 11-13 at the SEC Fall Classic in Nashville, Tenn.
